Why consider eyebrow tattooing?
Eyebrows are essential for an attractive, youthful appearance. They frame the eyes and lift the face naturally when shaped and maintained well. Some people have naturally thicker eyebrows, while others use pencils or powder to enhance their brows. Regardless of natural thickness, many people fill their eyebrows as part of their makeup routine. As we age, eyebrows can become thinner and lighter, making us appear older. Fuller and darker eyebrows contribute to a more youthful look.
Can you explain the process and purpose of eyebrow tattooing?
Eyebrow Feathering and Powder Brows are semi-permanent techniques to create full, natural-looking brows. The procedure involves creating hairlike strokes or filling in sparse brows using a tattoo machine. The results can last 6 to 12 months, depending on skin type and pigment retention. The treatment aims to enhance the symmetry and definition of the brows. The shape, saturation, and colour are customized to suit each individual. Perfectly shaped brows can transform and frame the face.
What factors should I consider when choosing a style of brow tattooing that suits me?
The technique for your brow treatment will be based on factors such as your existing brow hair, shape, skin type, age, lifestyle, and health conditions. Tawny will consult with you prior to the treatment to recommend the best approach for your specific needs.
How do I know which style of eyebrow tattoo is right for me?
The technique used for your brow treatment will be based on various factors such as your existing brow hair, shape, skin type, age, lifestyle, and health conditions. Tawny will provide a consultation before treatment and recommend your best approach.
When is my next appointment scheduled?
The follow-up appointment for complimentary touch-ups will be scheduled 4-8 weeks after the initial treatment to ensure the best results. Starting conservatively in the first session is our standard practice.
What is the duration?
The first session lasts 4 hours, the touch-up takes 2 hours, and consults are typically 1 hour long and often done on the same day as the treatment.
Can you describe the healing process?
During the healing process, emotions may fluctuate, known as ‘brow-polar.’ This process typically lasts around 2 weeks. After treatment, brows will look great, then become dark due to oxidation. Around 1 week in, brows may tighten and flake, feeling slightly itchy. It’s important to resist the urge to touch or scratch. As the old layer sheds, the colour may appear dull or faded, but this is temporary. The new skin will eventually reveal the pigment again over the next week.
Is it safe?
Eyebrow tattoo Melbourne is safe when done by a licensed professional. Uses the latest techniques for safety. Your skin’s integrity is our priority. There are some risks with skin penetration treatments, but they are minimal with proper aftercare. Our clinic uses single-use disposable items for hygiene and control.
Is a consultation necessary?
Clients at our Melbourne clinic do not need a consultation unless they have a previous brow or lip tattoo in the desired treatment area. Consultations are available for those who prefer to discuss options with Tawny before scheduling a treatment.
What steps are taken to ensure the result is symmetrical?
At Tawny’s, advanced face mapping techniques are used to find the perfect brow shape for each client based on their bone structure and facial shape. Tawny takes 30-60 minutes pre-drawing with a pencil until the shape is perfect. Brows are shaped sitting up as gravity and facial muscles affect facial symmetry. Tawny ensures client satisfaction before starting treatment, as she believes in taking the time for such an important step.
I am considering getting a patch test
Patch tests are not required but optional. They are recommended if you have had sensitivities to certain ingredients. Rare allergic reactions can occur. If you want a patch test, you must have a consultation before booking your treatment.
Are you a suitable candidate for eyebrow tattooing?
If you feel your eyebrows could be a little fuller or not symmetrical, and you are sick of pencilling them in, this could be the treatment for you.
Please see below the list of medical contraindications that would stop you from being suitable for eyebrow tattooing:
- Diabetes – due to problems with healing
- Hypertension – blood thinning medication causes excess bleeding and may affect colour
- Glaucoma – A medical certificate with your GP’s approval will be required
- Roaccutane – in the last 6 to12 months may result in poor healing
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding
- Psoriasis, rashes, abnormal skin textures, moles or irritation
- Chemotherapy patients
- Sunburnt skin
- Recent laser or cosmetic treatment (we advise waiting 4 weeks so that anti-wrinkle / dermal filler can completely settle, and so skin can recover)

Is eyebrow tattooing painful?
When performing eyebrow tattooing, we make the treatment as comfortable as possible. A fast-acting numbing cream is applied to your brows 20 to 30 minutes prior to your treatment. A topical numbing agent is also applied frequently during your treatment to maximise your comfort. The first few minutes are the most uncomfortable as your eyebrow tattooist outlines the shape that has been drawn before any more numbing cream is used. Once this is applied, the area goes almost completely numb, and the rest of the procedure will be a lot more comfortable.
What should I expect after my eyebrow tattoo appointment?
You will be provided with aftercare cream at your tattoo appointment to use throughout your healing process. Immediately following your appointment, your eyebrows will appear swollen, red and tender. A barrier cream will be applied to your brows by your eyebrow artist to help soothe and keep the area protected post-treatment. Your eyebrows will go through a series of changes after your treatment until the final result is seen. A timeline and summary of what to expect whilst your eyebrows are healing:
Day 1 – Brows look great
Day 2 to 3 – The colour of your brows will look almost too dark. This is part of the healing process, and they will not stay that dark
Day 5 to 7 – Brows become scabby, and the pigment appears to be falling off
Day 8 to 10 – The pigment in the brows may look like it’s disappeared
Day 14 to 28 – Brows may appear slightly patchy and uneven
Day 42 (after your touch-up appointment) – Brows will be true to colour and shape
